Echoes Sneak Peek: Mood-Weavers

Note: This sneak peek was provided in the Fall 2025 newsletter.

A mood-weaver is a type of Breathless magic user who infuses their voice with mood-altering frequencies. Breathless within earshot of a mood-weaver’s song experience feelings of calm, pleasure, and relaxation.

Sanctioned Uses

The effects of mood-magic are temporary, often fading soon after the song has ended, but the Breathless are still highly cognizant of the potential for manipulation. They have strict rules prohibiting its use outside of sanctioned activities.

Most commonly, mood-magic is used to:

  • Reduce sensitivity to pain in the ill, injured, and emotionally distressed

  • Decrease alertness and awareness during surgical procedures

  • Enhance enjoyment at social gatherings (e.g., whale-song observances and full moontide feasts)

  • Increase honesty in interrogation subjects (witnesses and persons accused of committing offenses)

Prolonged Exposure

Mood-magic is an excellent tool to relieve negative feelings and physical sensations, but only temporarily. Adults exposed to mood-magic for extended periods often become emotionally unstable for a short period before returning to normal. Further, is forbidden to soothe young children with mood-magic, as it can result in adults who are unable to soothe themselves.
