Writing Update: Villain-y Ducks

What happened?

I mentioned in the last update that I’d found a way to make the antagonist more formidable, terrifying, and pervasive. Much of this last quarter was devoted to incorporating this change. This included:

  • Re-working the foundational mythologies of my world

  • Shifting around some of the world’s historical events

  • Updating the antagonist’s backstory, motivations, and personality

  • Mapping out new reveals through the protagonist’s POV

  • Re-outlining the ending with this new set of variables (setting, magic dynamics, antagonist motivations)

  • Teasing out the implications of these changes in existing chapters

In short, I got my villain-y ducks in a row. There were…a lot of ducks. They required a lot of wrangling. But it was worth it. My mind is now fully wrapped around this massive shift, and I have resumed the rewrite, continuing on into Act 3.

That’s where I am now: in the midst of Act 3.

What’s next?

I will be charging full steam ahead. I won’t take my eye off the finish line. It feels close. Stay tuned!
